Serious question: If the whole point of tenure, historically, was to protect professors who express controversial views, why do so few tenured professors today express controversial views? What are some specific reasons? (I'm working on an article about this.)

There are plenty of professors on the left who are expressing controversial views. There doesn't seem to be much blowback for controversial left wing positions.

Yes, 'controversial' is contextual. Many mainstream non-academic views seem outrageous to many academics, and vice-versa.
