One piece of advice about admit visits: Pay attention to the grad students there. Are they cohesive? Honest with you? Happy overall? If programs are comparable, pick the happy place. If they're not, still seriously consider the happy place. And enjoy the visits! You earned them.
Also, do the other grad students and professors there support free speech? Viewpoint diversity? Do they welcome heterodox opinions? Your views may change over time -- will you still be able to find friendly colleagues & mentors? @HdxAcademy
On a visit to Colorado college in 2008 or so I noticed Democrat campaign signs in dorm windows and left wing causes advocated at tables in the campus center. At a Q & A after the tour I asked about diversity on campus. “Oh we’re very diverse.”
I asked what percentage of students and teachers are liberal vs conservative. Answer: Not sure of exact numbers but there are more liberals. I asked “If you don’t know then how can you claim diversity?” Answer: Blank stare. (Pause). I’ll have to check with the office.
