A shameful @nytimes hatchet job by @jenszalai on Steven Pinker's new book. Basic argument: if things aren't getting better for _everybody_, then progress is meaningless. And it mocks utilitarianism, which is the only coherent normative ethical system. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/28/books/review-enlightenment-now-steven-pinker.html?smid=tw-share …

For everyone freaking out about my utilitarianism, please learn a little more about it before slamming it; here's an excellent FAQ I assign to students in my Effective Altruism class, which addresses common misunderstandings https://www.lri.fr/~dragice/utilitarianism/faq.html …

Yes. It's the only coherent ethical system.

Utilitarianism is only coherent in that it coherently justifies whatever your subjective moral values are.

This is an incorrect argument against a bad review of a paragraph that gets some things wrong. @sapinker is right that reason is the best route out of this madness, but there's a lot of variance along the wayhttps://twitter.com/CColose/status/969320146874654722 …

Dealing with bad criticisms of bad arguments is worse than the dealing with the original bad argument. When taking the time to respond to the bad criticism, you suspend skepticism of the bad argument, which many see as endorsement or poor equivalency. BS increases non-linearly.

Perhaps it would be good if this sort of thing had a name. (Assuming you are right here.) This is perhaps a wrong cubed argument or a wrong^3. Someone is wrong about why somebody is wrong about why somebody is using wrong arguments in defense of a claim you agree with.

The extreme poverty is almost vanished even in Latin America and some portions of Africa. Literacy is normal now and uncommon 200 yrs ago. Everybody, indeed, is getting better, with few exceptions, like Venezuelan and NK's people.

It is the best ethical system, maybe not perfect, but much better than Kant's ethics or virtue ethics.

Utilitarianism is, indeed, a coherent normative ethical system. I'm not sure, however, that most human beings are coherent enough to desire to live in a *truly* utilitarian world.
