At American universities, coaches for men's sports make over $800,000/year on average, across all sports, from football to lacrosse. Most sports don't make net income at most universities, so are tax-subsidized. Professors make an average of $92,000. Does this make sense?

not sure it's the case that sports don't make net income if you count donations to the sports programs

Yes, I’d like to see those numbers. I’ve never heard the claim any sports program with a million dollar coach is net negative

Historically they care. They were key to the rise of both football and basketball. It goes institution to institution today. For example, Alabama, Michigan, Duke or North Carolina.

If they didn’t care, they wouldn’t pay for obscenely expensive season tickets (or tickets in general), merchandise, or cable television subscriptions to watch their alma mater’s teams play. Money talks, as they say.

Again back to the supply and demand, they care monetarily. Even if it’s not an equal distribution I would argue there is still a net benefit, although obviously imperfect
