At American universities, coaches for men's sports make over $800,000/year on average, across all sports, from football to lacrosse. Most sports don't make net income at most universities, so are tax-subsidized. Professors make an average of $92,000. Does this make sense?

Heavy skew to football. Brings in the cash. Losing teams, not so much. Profs: nada. So, Yes it makes sense.

Profs bring in a huge amount of grant money. They often pay for their own salaries in STEM fields.
