This would be better represented as a median as opposed to a mean. Usually, the coaches at the top (Football and Basketball) generate a profit for the state.
That's the usual claim, but I've never seen compelling data. Wonder why.

Have you ever looked for any? Most public universities publish their full budgets online.

It usually all gets pushed into an athletic pool. So we can't see how much money football and basketball make because a school might buy extra crew boats or send their field hockey team to Europe.
