Is it now profitable enough for professors to create their own brand and disaffiliate from the Universities? Obviously, Peterson and Weinstein were able to, but I wonder how possible it is.

It's extremely difficult to do that, IMHO. The same ideologies that punish heterodoxy in the universities also influence literary agents, publishing houses, Youtube monetization, speaking engagements, and most other possible income sources.

I have found tenure to be a double-edged device. It is true that it can protect scholars with controversial views, but the much more common use of tenure has been to protect and prop up inept professors who have no business being in academia.
