Should an author read his own work? Good arguments both ways. But a professional voice actor will have more experience and (I believe) produce a better overall product. He'll have access to better recording equipment, too, which is key.
I did the recording for the audio book of my last book 'Mate'. It was one of the most difficult things I've ever done. Incredibly challenging. But I could convey the meaning, pacing, and nuance better than a professional reader could.
Agreed, Geoff....I think it's one of those things that looks easy, but is difficult to get just right unless you are a professional book reader.
