Also, the more respect and understanding you show to political opponents, the more confident they can be that you're not just virtue-signaling to your own in-group by demonizing the out-group.

That makes sense on a practical level, and we find similar sentiments in the Talmud including how to give tochacha/rebuke to others. Of course we also find exclusionary rhetoric from time to time. Much depends on circumstances/details.
