Over 50 billion farm animals are being raised for human food right now, mostly in bad conditions. Showing any concern at all about the vast scope of this suffering provokes many twitter trolls to call one a 'soyboy'. Ah, life's rich diversity of ethical principles.

I solved my ethical issue with eating meat (I'll be the last meat eater) by visiting a slaughterhouse and a farm as a teenager. My take: If you can't look at an animal being slaughtered or kill it yourself, don't eat meat.
I'm much less concerned about the few seconds or minutes of actual slaughter than the months of suffering if animals are raised in bad conditions.

The more developed countries become the better husbandry they seem to get. Soon there'll be synthetic meat available for those not wanting to eat real animal meat.
