I strongly supported the Paleo diet in my 'Mate' book (2015), and think it's a great foundation for physical health. But since then, I've grown more concerned about the ethical problems with factory-farmed meat and fish.

In principle, maybe. Good question, haven't thought much about it. In practice, animal 'suffering' encompasses a lot more than physical pain, e.g. boredom, lack of social interaction, inhibition of natural movement, etc....

I think subtle conflation of “factory farming” with “eating meat” is more damaging to the dialogue of treating animals well than it is helpful

The vast majority of animals raised for 'meat' are factory-farmed chickens, and their conditions are generally horrific.

I feel you. I raise beef cattle in a land restoration-focused context, meaning I'm too weird for conventional ranchers and too carnivorous for many self-deemed environmentalists, as I advocate highly conditional meat consumption. Hunting wild animals that have had wild, free-range lives might be OK if death is quick. I'm not sure ... but anyway it provides way less than 1% of meat eaten.
