I think free range, grass-fed cows can, arguably, live net positive lives, and can be eaten ethically. If everyone switched from battery-cage chickens to ethically pastured cows, that would be a huge win.

Most traditionally raised cows spend most of their time on 'pasture' already. Just the final months in feed lots. Most feed lots are less than 1000 head as well. Agree that chicken/pork is less defensible due to conditions. Also less healthy for human consumption.
