Do college student ratings of classes predict how much they learn? Not at all, according to a huge recent meta-analysis of 97 studies. So why do we still use student ratings for promotion and tenure decisions?https://www.researchgate.net/publication/308344453_Meta-analysis_of_faculty's_teaching_effectiveness_Student_evaluation_of_teaching_ratings_and_student_learning_are_not_related …

Metrics, including student evaluations, often seem to be developed and maintained for the convenience of decision-makers (i.e. 'bureaucrats') to have a portfolio of reasons to select from to justify to whomever whatever it is they are going to do anyway.

That’s an excellent question. The situation is not unlike letting 8 year olds set their own bed time, or letting middle schoolers decide how much homework they get.
