I've lived, worked and done business in America. I feel completely comfortable with American culture. But when I spent some time at an American college it was like a parallel alien civilization. I spent my entire time hanging out with foreigners.

The constraints seen on campus are creeping into ordinary society to but in the form of self-censorship. The US I moved to in the 2000s is very different from the US in the 2010s. On college campuses, "diversity" means "everyone thinks the same way". Read "1984" and you'll begin to understand the lingo employed on campus.

This has been@my experience. Sad reality.

This is where that soft bigotry of low expectations comes in. I had a professor whose English was poor, parts of the lecture had Mandarin asides for maybe 7 people in front. Evaluations were scrupulously kind. Meanwhile Anglo profs got SLAUGHTERED for minor insults/gaffes.

Also this. If your family survived Maoist China...it feels like American colleges are really not going to be that much of a minefield. Not to mention significantly less competitive.
