Sure, but chemists and number theorists don't need tenure to do their work. Rolling contracts would suffice. The whole point of tenure is protection against outside society's intellectual and moral fads and witch-hunts. If unengaged with outside society, no need for tenure.

I've got nothing against traditionalism or patient scholarship. But those are among the values that need the most protection in current academia.

I would have contracts out to the 10 year point and then tenure. 5 years of work for a lifetime job isn’t enough.
