Is your social scientist example typical or atypical of robust data sets in the field?

There's a lot of very strong quantitative work in some social sciences (e.g. big data studies in econometrics, or political attitudes) , but in many, it seems possible to get a Ph.D., or even tenure, with 'qualitative' research on very small convenience samples.
