IIRC, almost everyone there speaks French, Italian, and German; but it would be simpler with one lingua franca, yes?

As a Swiss German living in French-speaking Switzerland, I can say: Yes. xD But I think Switzerland has some shared language through its unique political institutions. The Swiss German and Swiss French/Italian languages are diverging from their main counterparts.
