The Tonto crape myrtle does well in zone 7a and should thrive in NM. Other good choices: Muskogee crape, pink dogwood, and Cleveland pear. They all grow fast and add color to a front yard.

Don’t plant a lawn. If you do, then don’t plant trees in it, unless they are containerized. Vastly different watering requirements for lawn vs trees.
