Isn’t he just saying “I think freely about different topics.” Diversity of opinions, I thought meant different positions/conclusions on a given topic. Means for a single person, it’d be incongruent. Or the topic is not defined/specific enough.

Ex: a single person cannot have diversity of opinion on existence of God or free-will. They’d say yes, no, or I don’t know. I think having diversity of opinion on a well defined/specific topic requires different minds.

It seems to me to depend on how reasonable people are being. If very, then external diversity is hard to beat. If not, then internal diversity is the best you can do. Stag hunt vs hare hunt.

I wish I had also said this: I agree that internal viewpoint diversity is valuable. And, speaking for myself, I've found that one of the best ways to increase my viewpoint diversity is to learn how things look from other people's perspectives -- which requires external diversity.

i'm a 40-year libertarian. It didn't work preindustrial either, in fact no one thought of it. Libertarianism is better as a gadfly political philosophy to keep us asking why are we letting government get so big and intrusive?
