Minor correction Geoff. Sowell referred to these two visions as the 'constrained' and 'unconstrained' visions in A Conflict of Visions (1987). Steven Pinker has referred to them as 'tragic' and 'utopian' visions in The Blank Slate and Better Angels of Our Nature.

Oddly, I never cared for LOTR. I actually spent time in a seminary and knew guys who grew up reading Tolkein like I grew up reading Shakespeare, but it never grabbed me. (Movies or books.) But I agree with Sowell about the 'tragic vision' and do have that. Go figure...
