A small, secure, agile, evidence-based government is good. What many countries have now is the opposite: mindless, bloated parasites. Any political leader whose absurdity reduces the reputability of their country's bloated parasite might be a net benefit for their civilization.

As long as the nuclear option isn't in the realm of the absurd.

I was thinking more of Merkel and Macron than of Trump, actually.

I am sure you have read Parkinson's Law but if not, this is his territory and I have never seen it explored and pinned more succinctly or witheringly.

It's a perfectly normal (SNAFU) situation. Why would it be otherwise when there is no causal mechanism which would provide a different outcome?

I am sympathetic to that view but is government really a bloated parasite, or perhaps more like an infestation that has multiplied out of control (ie should be a a handful of birds pecking at insects but is now millions of lice)? Does this matter?

It just seems to me that "parasite" is quite a strong, anchored allusion but I don't see them as capable of bloating so much as of multiplying. This makes their eradication harder, too.
