Theseus was Athenian of course. He was aided by the Cretan princess Ariadne (who he abandoned). But, yes, killing the Minotaur was serious business. And reflected his opposition to Minoan tax policy. FWIW, my dad lives on Labyrinth street 2 miles from where the deed was done. ;-)
