It's reasonable to chat for a minute or two just so both social primates feel comfortable sharing the same enclosed space, and then for both to impose no more conversation than the other warmly desires.

"No more conversation than the other warmly desires" is so beautiful I want to cross-stitch it and hang it on the wall.

And no conversation at all for people who would be expending their weekly "talk to humans" token by the agonizing, sweating act of trying to come up with a non-insulting way to ask not to talk to someone any more--and then failing, ending up trapped. They need an app setting.
