Many American universities have about a 40% dropout rate in the first three years, with less than 50% of entering freshman graduating within six years. That suggests a callous disregard for the opportunity costs to unqualified students of admitting them.

As a current student I have seen that dropout rates are so high because students are experiencing debilitating depression from the insanity of student loan debt.
