One reason why citizens should learn about guns is that some of them will end up on juries, deciding cases in which a murderer claims that his gun just 'went off accidentally'. That is extremely unlikely with almost all modern firearms. Ignorance has costs.
It might be like trying to explain DNA evidence to jurors whose high schools never taught biology. Some background is helpful in most technical matters.

If these citizens can't learn and follow what an expert witness is telling them, then even a basics on gun ownership isn't going to help them. If so, my first concern would be to make sure they pull out of the parking lot before I do.
