Universities need viewpoint diversity, and that means we must welcome conservative, centrist, libertarian, and Christian students and faculty. A great piece from @clayroutledgehttps://www.jamesgmartin.center/2017/01/letter-conservatives-need-college-college-definitely-needs/ …

I agree with the sentiment of the piece. I do not think conservative antipathy towards higher education is rooted in the desire to avoid opposing views. Rather I think it's a lack of desire to submerse themselves in an openly hostile environment. /1

Ideological arguments are one thing. When leftists define opposing views illegitimate by definition, and subsequently the person who holds those views illegitimate, different thing. /2

When an otherwise devout gay man chooses not to attend a church with a rabidly anti-gay minister, we say "who can blame him?" When conservatives choose to not attend a university with an openly-hostile faculty and admin, we say "they're anti-higher ed."

I agree with all these frustrations. I really do. But if everyone other than the Left abandons universities, who ends up controlling the public culture, the science, and the intellectual legacy of our civilization?
