I think the appropriation is in the claiming of pride in which you did nothing to contribute. The "pride" you're thinking of may be the sense of gratitude for accomplishment of others.
If a current individual can take pride in what an earlier version of itself accomplished a few years ago, why can't families and cultures take pride in what earlier versions of themselves accomplished a few generations ago? Both rely on continuity of identity over time.
