You shouldn't be "proud" of your culture: you should be honored by the privilege of partaking in it, and grateful for its existence, despite your inadequacy. That is not at all the same thing.https://twitter.com/jordanbpeterson/status/935377804136349696 …

Real cultural appropriation -- that's when someone is proud of his culture despite having done nothing to support it, extend it or transform it: a message to the far right.

If our great-grandparents built a good culture specifically so their future descendants could feel proud of it, we'd be weirdly ungrateful not to feel pride in their legacy.

Pride in a legacy and pride in an accomplishment are different, probably in some agency-difference term, just as the regret/shame you may feel for your ancestors' mistakes is different from what you feel about your own.

FFS. Jane Austin drew a very useful distinction between Pride and Vanity. Pride being what we think of ourselves and Vanity what we would have others think of us. There's nothing wrong with Pride. Feckin academics!

Its not so we can feel pride in their legacy, its so we can respect and honor it, once you do that you gain pride. You can't inheret pride, but you can inheret responsibilites that once accepted, alllow you to feel honor.

Being overly proud of your culture would provide no impetus to make improvements of it. Having a modicum of pride of your culture could lead someone to take steps to protect and serve it.

pride leads to the idenitification with your culture; an illusion that brings suffering, violence, hatred, etc.
