Academics use language as our main professional tool, so we often over-estimate its importance. Many imagine that policing how people talk is enough to drive social change. An absurd fallacy.

Yes and we all know how it worked out. Trying to create the Perfect Man created a Frankensteins monster, Homo Sovieticus: "ideological schizophrenic, honest liar, person always ready for constant and voluntary mental self-mutilations". http://bit.ly/2lmU2rv pic.twitter.com/LawJoEFSfX

Well, it's a good way to drive social change in the direction of weakening those who want to police how people talk! E.g., current tax bill under which elite universities take a hit.

Perhaps one of the biggets mistakes that so many have made over the post several has been operating under the assumption that we will one day have a perfect rainbow utopia of equality, peace, and tolerance.

Same with journalists and other members of the "chattering classes". When your powers are limited to certain things (moving the Overton window in this case), you can't help but overestimate their relevance. Hard to admit that things are actually beyond your control.

Some magical thinking here. The reality is molded by words. The RIGHT incantation (policing the public discourse) can transform the social behavior. The academics as witches
