Everyone who spends their life seeking political power, from any party, is likely to have some Dark Triad traits & skeletons in their closet. The question is whether the sociopath supports good policies that benefit millions, or dumb policies that hurt millions.

Platforms are not strongly related to policies, and you can't expect voters to judge policies.

Because the alternative is rule by a subgroup, and averaging out bias from group signalling is in practice more valuable than rule by a somewhat smarter subgroup.
