The Earth doesn't need more kids, but each newborn should be presumed good, and raised carefully. All else being equal: 1. Family is good 2. A committed partner is good 3. A stable partner in parenting is good, and increases the chance of raising a child to be a healthy adult
We don't _need_ more kids, but we can support more people. And higher population is better, all else being equal, if you're the reasonable kind of utilitarian.

The tradeoff of contraception is entirely unclear. The easiest way to slow population growth is investing in the education of girls/women. Comprehensive education including but not limited to birth control, negotiation and refusal skills, is the surest step to sustainability.
