Semantics. If you're the one not provided for you would perhaps see it as oppressive. But I suspect your perspective is one of privilege.
Who 'provides' for the 'provided for'? Other people, paying taxes, under coercion of the state. So who is 'oppressed' under that system: those who are coerced, or those who enjoy the benefits of the coercion?

It's interesting that you equate a functional society w infrastructure, healthcare, education, civic services etc as "oppressive". I don't see it that way.
