There aren't any 'primitive emotions'. Emotions are complex adaptations that solved certain problems very efficiently in prehistory. Some emotions are just less useful in modern civilization.
Pain is very complex, context-dependent, dynamic, etc -- ancient, but not simple. And still fairly relevant.

To be fair, primitive doesn't mean simple - it means first/primeval/primal. Sometimes, the primitive version of something is as complex as the latest, or even more so.
