Agree with the former. I don't think I'd quite say the latter. More like: all emotions are physiologically grounded and culturally conditioned in their expression.

To be fair, primitive doesn't mean simple - it means first/primeval/primal. Sometimes, the primitive version of something is as complex as the latest, or even more so.

I disagree. Fight now is a reflex emotion. emotions now are more nuanced, and we have the cognitive capacity to treat them as such.
