Because correlation is not causation. The headline is misleading. Research does *NOT* prove that marriage causes economic equality. I am a little concerned that a careful researcher like yourself would disregard scientific caution just because it fits your politics.
My political attitudes about marriage are extremely complicated, and I don't have an agenda about it.

Marriage is certainly correlated with economic success. But that may have more to do with people who respect institutions tend to get married and be economically successful. Rather than what is implied: marriage leads to economic success.
