We have to get annual flu shots because flu viruses evolve new defenses every year. CDC tracks the evolution. It's one of their main jobs.

No, they swap out new combos of well known proteins H & N each year. As in, like H7N9, H3N2. The H1N1 strain in the 2017-18 Vax is 100yo.1/
