There are clearly people who are mentally ill and have no business owning firearms. And others who could manage. Who decides? Quandary
Also, arguably over 30% of Americans have some form of mental illness at some point. Do we deny all of them their #2A rights?

Frankly I would err on side of more difficulty in acquiring a firearm but it's more a political issue than scientific one. Emotions prevail

Reasonable people can disagree, but I hesitate to deny rights to people. Here, gov't would have incentives to label all dissidents 'crazy'
