Why does the Left love creepy polysyllabic euphemisms that obscure reality? 'Underprivileged' means 'poor'. Why not just say 'poor'?

Because it doesn't mean 'poor'. It means 'member of disadvantaged group', even if the individual member is middle class to rich.
In principle that's true. But in practice I've always heard it used just to mean 'poor'.
