Total strawman. This is a piece by a specific op-ed writer, not "the NYT", and he does not believe the first claim. Ergo no contradiction.
NYT often advocates strong gun control, as exemplified by this Op Ed, and also demonizes police. Hundreds of articles that do each.

I do support viewpoint diversity, by NYT times doesn't offer that. They're too consistent within issues, and too inconsistent across issues.
