Define 'nonsense'?
If you have to start a research paper by defining your terms, you're either using the wrong terms, or writing in the wrong language.

By 'research paper' I was implying an empirical research paper, e.g. in psych. For math proofs, of course definitions are important.

In my world, ALL terms need to be defined upfront, in the paper.

it happens fairly often in math papers because what some call a "left X" other might call a "right X" etc.

ie, certain ambiguities exist up to some "reflection along an axis"

In math/CS I don't think this is true at all! We have a bad habit of co-opting general terms to mean specific technical things.
