Centrists want to improve the world. They just have centrist approaches for doing so.

It depends on the issue at hand. Centre left and centre right disagree on many issues. Pluralism.

The key thing is to agree on fundamental rights, and the way policies are agreed. Hence constitution, rule of law etc. And being civil etc.
