I don't think there're nods and winks for physical sciences candidates. So please don't exaggerate.
You're right, it's mostly in humanities, social sciences, and behavioral sciences; hard sciences are more strictly meritocratic.

Certainly not true in economics. Not in political science (my discipline) either--most research does not address ideological issues.
