A world w/o national borders or distinct cultures is like a ship w/o bulkheads: there's no damage-limitation system in case of disaster.

Bulkhead doors make it harder for some sailors to flee disasters too. The utilitarian calculus ain't pretty either way.

In 20th cent it's pretty clear that more porous borders would've led to better outcomes re victims of Communism, Nazism, Turk genocide, etc

Sometimes admitting more refugees would have made sense; other cases, not. But w/o borders we can't even make the judgment calls.
