How is 'diversity' a value? Surely it is just a statistical reality. Not being smug. Genuine question.

It's both a means to goals, and a value in its own right, e.g. in science, when selecting a mate, or when evaluating a policy.

Maybe splitting hairs here but valuing a thing (noun) is different then the thing (noun) being the value.

E.g valuing money vs money being the value.
