The idea is that if they were to leave then the Taliban (bad guys) would step in to fill the power vacuum. It's not obvious when this stops being true.

It’s probably that it offers a strategic position to conduct clandestine operations into Pakistan and Iran, plus limiting China’s efforts at mercantile incursions into the Middle East, but we couldn’t say this publicly so the public is left with the Taliban/terrorist rationale.
