Unfortunately, most self-identified "independents" aren't true independents and usually reflexively vote for one of the two parties. There was a study last year finding that only about 1 in 10 voters is truly independent.

True, but the research has had less to say on how we can influence voting in party primaries, where ranked-choice voting SEEMS to make the most sense.

Not ranked choice... Approval voting! (vote for as many candidates as you like, but give no more than one vote to any single candidate).
-
This. Every indication is that approval voting is superior to RCV, especially WRT improving (i.e., moving away from) 2-party politics.

I imagine it would take an election catastrophe of some sort to move ranked-choice voting into the Overton window. Seem implausible? UBI ended up on the agenda due to a global pandemic that people insist "nobody saw coming."https://twitter.com/AndrewYang/status/1276948427247624193 …

Wish I could agree. We have ranked voting in Australia and yet a duopoly effectively remains. Not saying it won't have its benefits, but I'm skeptical about how radically positive it would be.
-
We do get the benefit of putting the worst candidate last. Quite satisfying.

@ESYudkowsky the Nash equilibrium of instant runoff is still a two party system! Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

Just going to second that approval voting is better than ranked choice, especially for this (Ranked choice is still subject to split vote & extremism sketch: left ranks "far left > center >> far right", right ranks opposite, which removes center even tho center is best for all)

@AndrewYang Must have read the new book by@katherinegehl and@MichaelEPorter titled "The Politics Industry." The roadmap outlined is precisely about a new path in politics in addressing the powers of the "Duopoly."Thanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
