Two cheers for Parler. But for people who have spent years of sustained effort building up decent followings on Twitter, there's a huge cost to switching platforms & starting over from scratch. Fight where the enemy is. Right here. Don't lead your army off into the wilderness
PS I'm open-minded about Parler. But what's to keep it from - being taken over (financially or socially) by people who want to destroy it? - smeared & stigmatized just like Gab was? Genuine question. Does Parler have built-in protections against these two huge problems?
Network effects is the power of social media, by switching platform early, you lose the network effects because of transitioning to a smaller network.
I'm skeptical because the last time it happened was GAB, and they stopped free speech the instant they became economically viable. At least Twitter is the devil I know
The bigger question is what’s to keep Parler from implementing its own regime as oppressive as Twitter’s, just aligned with its founders’ personal values. Their disallowed speech policy lists all the same broad categories that Twitter cites when censoring.
IDK about Parler, I'm open-minded and hopeful. All I know is that this enemy's most powerful weapon is the ability to silence people, and one way to neutralize that weapon is to build alternatives. But that only works if reasonable people participate. Otherwise it's Gab 2.0.

First, Parler requires valid phone numbers for all accounts. Next, it allows for users to "verify" their legitimacy by going through a process that ensures they are real users. The process grants red verification badges that do what Twitter's "blue checkmarks" are meant to do.
