My hot take: Picasso was the worst thing that ever happened in the history of art. He killed 'beauty' as an aesthetic goal, and replaced it with elitist signaling. Wendy Steiner (U Penn) has a good book about this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0684857812/ https://twitter.com/marinamaral2/status/1275812568469245952 …

Well, grand-parents who love impressionist painting have been ranting about Picasso for a very long time… so, cooling take? 😂 Mine: When the *goal* is "beauty" you get a pale imitation of yesterday’s art every single time. What important artists had "beauty" as their *goal*?

Every important artist in history had beauty as their goal until the 20th century.

It's been properly documented that the CIA funded the abstract art movement.

Yep. That was one of the weirdest & most shocking red pills I learned in college art history classes.

Picasso worked his whole life to free us from perspective and he was right to do so. Marcel Duchamp, IMO, is a much bigger problem, but he also did what he did to expose the shallowness of art critics. All the great deconstructors are actually useful

Just like with post-modernists, the problem is less the great game changers - Foucault, etc...- but the crowds of midwits trying to do the same thing but without understanding what they're doing, only for status

Was introduced to Picasso by an amazing CS lecturer using Liverpool’s collections of art as a lead into graphics and UIs. A lot of modern art was a reaction to photography taking over. There are many new artists doing incredibly beautiful photo realistic paintings today.
