While I'd leave it to professional researchers to define the lines of groupthink and mental health issues amplified by groupthink, it's hard not to get the sense the grandchildren wouldn't harbor an innate sense that something has always been off with Grandma.

Why not? There were always a lot of grandparents who were embarrassing to their grandchildren, why would that change? (I hope she will be embassarassing because her children will know better how to argue.)
