I'd been curious to see if the AAUP would chime in after headline after headline about Professor X saying something racist and/or offensive related to the national police brutality protests. To recap, there's been Charles Negy at UCFhttps://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/05/us/ucf-professor-charles-negy-race.html …

Today, the AAUP issued a statement, saying what they've always said: Freedom of extramural speech, including comments made by faculty outside the classroom and on social media, is "essential to the American conception of academic freedom." https://www.aaup.org/news/statement-racial-justice-higher-education#.XvJK8dNKjYV …

In fact, "'offensive style or opprobrious phrases may in fact have been chosen precisely for their expressive power.' Faculty must not be disciplined for engaging in 'uncivil' or 'offensive' speech."

None of this is surprising or new. I had just wondered if, during this national reckoning on racism, there would be some shift of the needle re: racist or offensive speech from professors.

Do you think free speech should still be protected given current circumstances? Genuinely curious.

I do, but I also think it's reasonable for students in said professor's class to feel excluded by espoused racist views. Or for that prof's conduct to be biased. The tldr version: free speech in higher ed is often about more than just the speech itself.

Yep. And also, conservative, centrist, libertarian, & Christian students often feel alienated, marginalized, intimidated, & silenced by faculty who make fun of their views on social media. Awareness & tolerance needs to be raised in many ways.
